Exactly why dog lovers have got this preconceived view that small dogs are more difficult to train than medium sized or larger dogs, I will never be able to figure out. Small dog training should never be difficult.
Small dog training, is in no way different from training a puppy dog of any other larger sized breed. While training any puppy will have its peculiarities, according to its breed, almost all other facets remain similar, and the technique to training the dog should be the same, not withstanding its size.
Having said that, I will make an exception here, and say yes to the argument that small dog training may create issues in two facets, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy Crate Training. However, this is not because the dog is small breed, but ten times out of ten, because of the owner.
If a tiny breed pup is aggressive and poses a training problem, or if a smaller breed puppy cannot be crate trained or poses complications in being toilet trained, it is the owner who has ignorantly contributed to this state of affairs. Let us analyze how and why.
Aggression.
Smaller dogs are preferred because they are cute, they are like toy characters. Owners take pleasure in having their dog sit on their laps. This specific indulgence is where the trouble begins. The innate aggressive character of the canine, is to declare ownership over its sector, its food, even its master; all puppies want to be the alpha dog.
It is the ruthless streak in the dog that makes it to get on to the lap of its pack leader, particularly when there are a good number of humans seated in the room.
This is a clear act of violence. Instead of admonishing the puppy, every owner bar none, would pet the pup, although it jumped on to their lap uninvited, encouraging the aggressive streak in the pup. As a result the owner has given into the dog’s inherent need to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting mad at a much bigger dog is another obvious act of unwanted anger. To the owner, and even the people who witness it, this is seen as cute, simply because one dog is tiny while the other is bigger. Most owners pet and pat the pup instead of checking it, when it exhibits this aggression towards a larger dog.
The above are but instances as to why small size breed dogs are aggressive, and it s not because small dog training is very difficult.
Toilet Training
Owners choose to carry their small pups around no matter where they go, even at home and that makes it practically impossible to bathroom train them
It is as a reflex action that the owners of small breed dogs to lug the animal to the spot where the pup should go to the bathroom and then lug it back into the house.
It is this habit of carrying the puppy to the outdoors to poop that is the origin of all dilemmas. In addition, because the pup is by and large carried around so much it has no way of it suggesting to or warning the owner that it has to make its business.
Small dog training commences with treating the dog as any other sized dog. They have to be shown their pooping area on a leash. If owners cease carrying their small breed dogs they would be very successful in training them.
Dog crate training, is the most important part of dog training, and so it must be, even in Small Dog Training.
